Obituary for Mildred Norma Moran

Mildred Norma (Thurlow) Moran, 94, of Bridgewater, and formerly of Riverport, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2018, at Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg, with her son David at her side, having lived a wonderful life.

Born in Lunenburg, on July 2, 1924, she was the daughter of Charles William and Emily Maude (Kinley) Thurlow.

She is survived by her son David and his wife Shelley (Selig); sisters Margaret Morash and Evelyn Campbell, Halifax, brother Hon. Arthur Thurlow, Ottawa; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by parents and her husband, Rev. John S. Moran; her sister Florence Davis and brothers Charles Thurlow and Lionel Thurlow; several nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends.

Mildred was a caring, kind, and gracious lady who was willing to help others where and whenever possible. She loved and supported her husband, John, in his ministry in several communities in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, the last of which was Riverport, where they retired and made their home until her move to Bridgewater, ten years ago.

She graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. She served as an Outport Nurse in Newfoundland for several years where she excelled in a capacity that had great responsibilities, in difficult conditions. Her career as a nurse was brief in an official capacity, but life-long in the broader sense. She was a loving ‘stay at home’ Mom and she cared for her mother for many years.

She was a dedicated member of Trinity United Church, the Past President and long-time member of the UCW and an adherent of Bridgewater United Church.

She loved music and loved to sing and used her talents as a trained singer in her church and wider community. She led various choirs through the years and was a member of the Riverport Community Choir. Her hobbies included gardening, flower arranging, water and oil painting, sewing, knitting, upholstery and rug hooking. She loved to cook, bake and entertain guests in her home. She was always ready to try her hand at something new. As a result of all these interests and her involvement in many community organizations through the years, she forged many wonderful friendships.

The body is resting at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg, where visiting hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Thursday, December 6. A service in celebration of her life will be held on Friday, December 7, 2018, at 2:00 pm, at Trinity United Church, Rose Bay, Rev. Heather Ferrier and Angela Clifton, officiating. Burial to follow at Shepherd’s Hill Cemetery, Riverport.

Family flowers only please. Memorial Donations may be made to Trinity United Church, Riverport; Bridgewater United Church; the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore, or a charity of your choice.
