Obituary for Oliver Francis

Oliver Francis, 82, of Lunenburg, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2007, at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.

Born in Hermitage, NL, he was the son of the late Aquilla Wellington and Dessima Mabel (Rose) Francis.

Oliver went to sea fishing at the early age of 14 and then moved to the area where his first maiden fishing voyage out of Lunenburg was with the fishing vessel the Sherman Zwicker. He continued to fish out of the ports of Riverpoort and later on the Cape Beaver with National Sea retiring in 1989 due to ill health.

Oliver was a faithful member of St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg and an honorary member of the Orange Lodge Hermitage, NL. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.

Oliver is survived by his wife the former Lucy Evelyn Harris, daughter, Barbara Mary (Roland) Lilly; sons, Hubert (Dianna), Raymond (Mary), both of Lunenburg; nephew, Thomas Francis, raised by Oliver and Lucy, sisters, Ida (Hubert) Anderson, Lunenburg; Mary (Samuel) Fiander, Ramea, NL.; grandchildren, Jeffery, Shawn (Nicole), Terry (Crystal), Shannon (Robert Fox) Sherri, Rodd (Dawn), Ryan, Michael, David (Alicia), Stephen (Lisa) Scallion, Nicholas and six great-grandchildren, Lucas, Layten, Oliver, Emma, Cody and Cameron.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Freeman and infant brother Roland and infant sister Juanita.

Friends are invited to share their memories of Oliver with the family during visitation at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg, Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. A service to celebrate Oliver’s life will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg, Rev. Michael Mitchell officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dr. Arthur H. Patterson Centre for Restorative Care, St. John’s Anglican Church or to the charity of your choice.
