Obituary for Mary "Teresa" Oliver

Mary "Teresa" Oliver
Oliver (Butt-Hardwick), Mary "Teresa" 89

It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our loving mother, who was received into God’s love on May 1, 2016.

Born in Egerton, Pictou County she was the daughter of the late Alan Hubert and Mary Loretta (MacDonald) Hardwick. As a graduate of the Provincial Normal College in Truro, Teresa started her teaching career in Thorburn and continued in Halifax where she eventually devoted herself to teaching children with special needs. Retiring after 35 years Teresa made many lasting friendships and wonderful memories. Teresa’s love for mentoring children continued with a successful home daycare. She enjoyed concerts, playing cards and travel.

At the age of 70, she married her greatest friend, Leo Oliver, whom she loved for his kind warmth and sense of humour. They enjoyed long drives and going to the movies. Teresa was a member of the Retired Teachers Organization, Dartmouth Lawn Bowling Club, and was a long time volunteer at the Nantucket Seniors Center. It was through the CWL where she found her church family and a proud 25-year member of the Catholic Woman’s League; St Vincent de Paul Parish.

Teresa was a kind and selfless mother and will be deeply missed by her children: Karen Morton, Maders Cove, Alan Butt(Angela), Joan Pike(Craig), Judy Hodgson(Richard), Janet Hollett (Peter), Stepsons: Jack (Cindy), Frank (Marie) Oliver, all of HRM. Brother, Gerald (Monica) New Glasgow, Brother in Law John Smeltzer HRM, Best friend and sister of the heart, Carol Butt HRM. Grandchildren: Robbie, Tara, Shauna, Stephen, Jake, Mitch, Liam, Jeff, Andrew, Jaclyn, Christopher, Mathew and several great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Leo, daughter Mary, brothers Arthur, Phillip, James, Bernard and sister Joan; grandson, Robert (Bobby) Boehner; son-in-law, Bernie Morton and her loyal companion, Cydni.

Friends are invited to share their memories of Teresa with her family during visitation on Thursday, May 5th 5-8 pm at St Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Flying Cloud Drive, Dartmouth where mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 am followed by a reception. Interment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, at a later date. Donations in memory of Teresa may be made to the church.
