Obituary for Frank Allen Ernst

It is with sadness that the family of Frank Allen Ernst of Lunenburg announces his passing peacefully at home on Saturday, March 4, 2017, two weeks before his 96th birthday.

Born at Indian Point on March 18, 1921, he was the son of William G. and Ella L. (Heisler) Ernst.

He attended Indian Point school where he was involved in a number of sports, and competed in track-and-field and softball events around the province. In May 1940, Frank signed up with the Canadian Dental Corps and served as a Dental Technician at Halifax, Nova Scotia; Debert and Scoudouc, New Brunswick and Torbay, Newfoundland, working his way to Sergeant before his discharge in March 1946. Upon returning to Nova Scotia, Frank and his cousin Harry Walker (whom he served with in the Dental Corps) began the Lunenburg Dental Laboratory, a business they would continue for 37 years, retiring in 1983. In 1948, Frank married B. Ula "Judy" Cox, of Upper Stewiacke, and they settled in Lunenburg, where they lived for the remainder of their lives.

He was an avid golfer, and in retirement he could be found at the Bluenose Golf Club almost every day, a routine he would continue well into his late eighties.

Besides his parents, Frank was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Judy, son, Ronald, brothers, Clarence and Roy (Mary) and sister, Mary (Gerald) Zwicker, nephew Warren Zwicker, and later years companion, Agnes "Babs" Lockwood.

He is survived by grandsons, Matthew (Stacey Knickle), Cornwall, Stephen (Lynn Misner), Lunenburg, and their mother, Valerie Whynacht, First South; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 23, Lunenburg will hold a legion tribute on Thursday at 6:45 at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg, followed by visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial service to celebrate Frank’s life will be held on Friday at at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Temple Pentecostal Church, Mahone Bay, Rev. James Haughn, officiating. Interment will be in at Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg.
