Petronella “Nellie” Vandertoorn, 99, of Lunenburg, passed away, Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at Harbour View Haven Home for Special Care, Lunenburg.

Nellie was born in Scheveningen, Holland, in 1909, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Angelina (de Mos) Vanderzwan.

Nellie immigrated to Canada with her family in 1952, living in Lunenburg 21 years and Halifax 25 years before moving back to Lunenburg. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Nellie is survived by sons, Herb (Marley), New Minas; Mike (Shirley), Bridgewater; Casey (Renda), Hantsport; four grandchildren, Angela Bryan, Michael, Jason, Darrin Vandertoorn and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Cornelius, a brother and several sisters.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. A private family graveside service will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater, Rev. Ivan Norton, officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

The family would like to thank the staff of Harbour View Haven for their wonderful care of Nellie while she was a resident there.
