Obituary for Violet Irene Myra (Tanner)

It is with great sadness that the family of Violet Irene Myra, 93, of Lunenburg, and formerly of Garden Lots announces her passing on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Harbour View Haven Home for Special Care, Lunenburg.

Born in Stonehurst, she was a daughter of the late George and Iona (Wilneff) Tanner.

Violet grew up picking berries which she would sell for extra money. She would often remark that “I don’t regret the money we made from bending our backs and using our hands picking berries to sell”. She also worked with salt cod and cleaned homes for many of the local families in and around Lunenburg. For a period of time she also owned and ran her own canteen in Garden Lots.

Violet was a proud homemaker and was well known for her home cooking. Her recipes for Solomon Gundy and pumpkin pie are favourites in everyone’s recipe books. Her family gathered on a regular basis to enjoy her jiffy pudding and flat fried potatoes. Her love of gardening also ensured that there were always many jars of preserves and pickled vegetables.

She loved to dance and spent much of her summer time camping and enjoying being outdoors. Violet’s spunky personality kept everyone on their feet and she always kept the room filled with laughter. You always knew where she was because she was either humming a tune or singing her favourite country song. In her recent years she loved to sing “You are my sunshine”. Her voice always spoke with a smile when she would reminisce about the pride she had for her family. One of her often-used sayings was “Tomorrow never comes”.

Violet is survived by her daughters; Nadine (Frank) Grixti, Malta, Cindy (Wade) Knickle, Centre; son, Glenn, Lunenburg; guardian son, Vincent Green (Linda Sawler), Western Shore; grandchildren, Brian Grixti, Hayley Knickle (Adam Aulenback), Natalie Knickle, Nancy Myra (Adrian Harry), Michael (Wanda Veinotte) Silver, Susan (Lloyd) Tanner, Martin (Gina) Green, Cherie Green; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Charlotte Weiler, Toronto, Mona (Edward) Belczowski, Richmond Hill; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of fifty-nine years, Harley, sisters, Blanche, Ethel and Gwendolyn and brother, Paul; grandson Terri; daughters-in-law, Catherine Myra, Brenda Green.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy #3, Lunenburg, and from where visitation will be held on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate Violet’s life will be held on Sunday, June 24, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Central United Church, Lunenburg. Gary Carey, officiating. Interment will be in the Garden Lots Cemetery, Garden Lots.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations made to Harbour View Haven Home for Special Care or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

The family would also like to thank all the wonderful staff at Harbour View Haven for their compassionate and caring attention shown to Violet during these past few years.
