It is with great sadness that the family of Richard Edward Oakes, 78 of Bridgewater, announces his passing on Friday, August 24, 2018 at the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater.

Born in Conquerall Bank on August 5, 1940, he was the son of the late Norman and Syble (Haines) Oakes.

Richard began his working career, working in the woods. He then went to work for Acadia Gas, Oil Tankers on the east coast and great lakes. Also he worked for Department of Lands and Forest. He finished his working career at Harry Freeman’s & Sons Mill where he retired.

Richard also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He also treasured his time with his grandson Kyle of Chester. (Kyle-Bamps was so proud of you.) Richard also loved the time he and Betty spent together, either having coffee at the mall with friends (while Richard watched the girls walking past). The morning meetings in the lobby with the guys and Betty. Evening with friends at McDonalds. Visiting and watching his step family grow and be part of it.

Surviving are his wife, Betty (Conrad, Knickle) Oakes, grandson, Kyle Oakes; step-children, Annette (Gilbert) Forward, First South, Mark (Debbie) Knickle, Cornwall, Katrina (Tony) Jesso, Bakers Settlement, Sherry (Brian) Church, Lunenburg; daughter-in-law, Karen Oakes (David Miller) of Chester; step-grandchildren, Vangaline (William, Ryan (Tina), Brad (Amanda) Malin (Chad), Chad, Marcus (Jerrica), Vanassa (Dylan), Jeremy (Kathleen) and Jonathan; 8 step-great grandchildren; brother, Donald Oakes (Marilyn Millet) Bridgewater; sister, Joan Veinotte, Mahone Bay and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Richard was predeceased by his first wife, Beulah Robar, his son, Larry; brothers, George and Filmore and sisters, Margaret and Norma.

Thanks to the Staff of the 4th Floor medical ward at South Shore Regional Hospital for their wonderful care of Richard and to Rev. Ron Frampton and the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, August 28 at 2:00 p.m. at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Chelsea, Rev. Ron Frampton, officiating.
