Obituary for Irene Marie Falkenham (Smith )
It is with great sadness and peace of rest that we, the family, announce the passing of Irene Marie Falkenham (Smith), on January 1, 2019 at Harbour View Haven Home for Special Care, Lunenburg.
Born in Mason’s Beach on August 16, 1934 she was the daughter of the late Harry and Ella Mae (Tanner) Smith.
Married to Perry Falkenham she raised three children; Betty Ernst, Bruce Falkenham (Andrea Haines) and Peggy Falkenham-Boutilier (Cecil Boutilier); grandchildren Tania Ernst, Patrick Ernst, Candice Falkenham, Ashton Falkenham, Colin Boutilier (Missy) and Burke Boutilier, two great grandchildren, Piper and Ocean Boutilier.
Mothered by her sister Myrtle, their friendship was long lived. That love and sincere friendship continued until they both found themselves working with Louis C. B. Schwartz Shoes. The Lincoln Street shoe store business was purchased in 1973 by these two entrepreneurial women where they ran a respected, successful business for 15 years called, B & F Footwear. Irene sold shoes in addition to being the bookkeeper. Prior to raising three children she worked at Lunenburg Sea Products where the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic now stands.
Irene enjoyed cooking and baking from scratch. Prior to Christmas, the frenzy of making sure that there was fruit cakes, plum pudding, pies, cookies makes us smile as it was usually March until the fruit cake was finally consumed. She enjoyed hooking under the guidance of Mrs. Godfrey, ceramics, tole painting, knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, embroidery, sewing (where she took top honours in her class), smocking (oh the pretty dresses) and in later years, quilting. She had an eye for colour, plus her ability to find patience to rip seams and make it just right, produced beautiful results.
Together with family, Irene enjoyed travelling near or far. In early years, that meant packing up a family trailer and travelling. In later years, a cottage at the lake was a refuge for family barbecues and good times with grandchildren.
During the days before GPS devices, she was the copilot for many family trips to Halifax. Remembering the streets, buildings, general lay of the land, she was the person asked to accompany you on the journey.
She was a long-time member of the former Alexander Rebekah Lodge in Lunenburg where she was a former Noble Grand. She was a long-time member of Central United Church.
Irene was physically active with her sister Myrtle, walking the Lunenburg trail. Educated in a one-room schoolhouse meant walking from her Mason’s Beach home, a couple of miles each way to school. Sometimes during the winter, when the ice was frozen and although forbidden from walking on the ice, she jumped ice cakes to get the First South school. Smart, fun-loving and detailed, she enjoyed a good laugh and likely it was about something that humored only a “Smitty”, a nickname endeared from the milkman, from the days when milk was delivered to your milk box on the door step.
She was predeceased by her husband, Perry, sisters, Stella MacDow, Pauline MacKay, Myrtle Beck, Evelyn Savory and Lillian Wentzell. She was the youngest of six girls and an adopted brother, Roy.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. A private memorial service for family and close friends to celebrate Irene’s life will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg, Gary Carey officiating. Interment will be in the Garden Lots Cemetery, Lunenburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Central United Church, Garden Lots Cemetery or to a charity of your choice.
