Obituary for Mildred "Millie Freda Manthorne

It is with deep sadness that the family of Mildred Freda Manthorne announce her passing at Harbour View Haven Home for Special Care, Lunenburg, NS on February 26, 2019 at the age of 97 after an 11-year struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Millie is survived by her daughter, Jackie Manthorne, daughter-in-law Mona Forrest, granddaughter Sheanna Forrest-Manthorne and partner, Matt Postma, all of Ottawa, sister Fran Feindel of New Germany, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband Ralph Manthorne, parents Garnet and Maggie Rhuland, brothers Freeman and Garnet Rhuland and sisters Margaret Hiltz, Daisy Corkum and Shirley Mallalieu.

Millie was a lifelong resident of Lunenburg who participated fully in all this Bluenose town had to offer, from depression days to the Second World War years to the growth and then failure of the fishing industry. She was a graduate of Lunenburg Academy and went on to work at Louis C. B. Schwartz Shoes, Sear’s order office, and finally as Activity Coordinator at Harbour View Haven.

Millie was an accomplished water colour and oil painter as well as a craftsperson in many media, including quilting, smocking, crocheting, knitting, and rug hooking. She and Ralph spent every spring, summer and fall at their cottage on Heckman’s Island, where they enjoyed keeping a few chickens, baking dozens of apple pies, entertaining relatives and friends, and could regularly be seen canoeing to Fifty Acres. She was a faithful member of Central United Church and of the United Church Women, and participated in many social events.

Thanks to the doctors, nurses and other staff of Harbour View Haven for excellent care during her 11-year stay.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy #3, Lunenburg, where a Celebration of Life for Millie will be held on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lunenburg Academy Foundation, the Lunenburg Art Gallery, Harbour View Haven, or to a charity of your choice.
