It is with shattered hearts that the family of the late Donnie Schmeisser, 70, of Lunenburg, announce his passing on March 1, 2019 at Fisherman's Memorial Hospital. Donnie was born in Halifax. His parents, Norman and Phyllis moved to Lunenburg when he was nine months of age where they started their new Esso Fuel Agency business.

Left to mourn are his mother, Phyllis (Cook) Schmeisser, First Peninsula; his loving wife, Marilyn (Pridham) Schmeisser, brothers, Gary (Bonnie) Schmeisser, Bedford; Brian (Bernadette) Schmeisser, Montague, PEI, Michael (Shirley) Schmeisser, Qualicum Beach, BC; nieces and nephews Kyle, Kristen; Sarah, Mark; Krystina, Kimberley, Jaden; Jeffrey, Michael; Jordan, Martha, Margaree, Jubilee, James; Marcus, Erica; Nicole and Stevie. He was predeceased by his father Norman C. Schmeisser.

After attending Nova Scotia Institute of Technology in Halifax, Donnie returned home to join his father's company, "Norman C. Schmeisser Ltd" in Lunenburg. Donnie drove the large Esso oil trucks delivering fuel to households, businesses and ships on the waterfront. He did old furnace removals with new installations. He did service calls 24/7, often on treacherous stormy roads, and in bone chilling temperatures, to reinstate his customers heat. He cared and loved helping his customers. Donnie so enjoyed talking and learning from all of them. (these are the very people that taught him his weather prediction skills)

In 1981 Donnie purchased the Service section of business from his parents which he operated until retirement. In 2001 Donnie kept a promise to a dearly departed friend and sold his business N.C. Schmeisser Ltd. to embark upon a lifelong dream voyage.

In August 2001, Donnie and his beloved wife and teammate Marilyn began this Odyssey. With their little dog, Casey, they left Lunenburg Yacht Club in their 36' single engine Trawler and headed "South" down the Eastern seaboard stopping at many ports and meeting the most interesting, helpful people. On Dec. 23, 2001 they arrived at the beautiful Legacy Harbour Marina in Fort Myers, Florida, which became their second home. (And, the incredible Staff and Boaters there became their Second Family as they returned there each year for 17 years.) In this exciting nine month voyage they cruised the Eastern Seaboard, both coasts of Florida and many of the Beautiful Islands of the Bahamas. When questioned as to what was the best part of the trip, Donnie immediately replied "the wonderful people." Donnie & Marilyn "lived the dream".

Donnie had many interests and talents. He was happiest on or near the ocean, whether it be cruising, working in the engine room of his Boat, or walking his little dog Khloe along the Lunenburg waterfront meeting boaters. He loved most, his beloved Family, his two little dogs, his boats, the Beautiful Bahamas! and the many, many endearing friends he met on his way.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy #3, Lunenburg. A memorial service will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. from Central United Church, Lunenburg, Rev Grace Caines-Corkum, officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations made to Canadian Cancer Society, Central United Church, Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, or to a charity of your choice.

Sorry that this is so late but I have been spending all my free time with my Mom at the A.L.C. Unit in Lunenburg. Knew that Donnie was ill but hadn't heard that he had passed. My condolences to the entire family on behalf of myself and my mother Marion.

Now it seems like a life time ago but there are so many memories the Jourdain family had with Donnie and with Marilyn - before retirement. There are more boating stories than I am personally aware of but I know the friendship between Donnie, Marilyn, Mary and Hector Jourdain - Xanadu and the Bluefin are many. There are just as many stories of rum filled Friday nights at the Jourdain residence and likely elsewhere. Also, Christmas Eves - at Donnie and Marilyn's early in the evening, at the Jourdain's after midnight mass with all the French/Quebec traditions. It was a shock to hear of Donnie's illness and then he passed so quickly, we regret not having the opportunity to visit before his passing. But all the memories bring smiles and laughs. Condolences to all the family but particularly Marilyn. 45 years is a long time. May grace come to you in the next while and help you find your way through the loss and grief. Lots of love from the Jourdain family.
