Obituary for Irene Mildred Campbell (Shankle)

Irene Mildred  Campbell (Shankle)
Campbell (Shankle), Irene Mildred died at home on Thursday, January 28, 2010 surrounded by family, friends and loving caregivers.

Born in Middle LaHave, NS on November 15, 1917 she was the daughter of the late Fenton and Cora (Lohnes) Shankle.

Irene was a graduate of the Middle LaHave School and the School of Nursing of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. As a Registered Nurse she served as a Public Health Nurse in New Ross/Chester and moved on to a career in Obstetrical Nursing in Toronto, ON. Following the death of her husband, Jack, Irene returned to her home community of Middle LaHave and to her family home, where she continued to live until her death. Irene was actively involved in the life of her community. She was a life-long member and served as Elder of St. John’s United Church, a Life Member of United Church Women and Treasurer of the Middle LaHave Cemetery Company.

Irene’s feisty determination, practical wisdom, caring, sensitivity and sense of fun have emboldened and inspired us. She encouraged us to respect the lessons of our forebears while nudging us to pay attention to the rapid changes in the world around us, in our own community and to move into the future with confidence " and she was continually showing us how to do this.

Irene is survived by several cousins, nephews and nieces, good friends and neighbours and the entire church family of St. John’s United Church. Besides her parents, Irene was predeceased by her husband, Jack Campbell (1975), and her brother, Lambert, who was lost at sea (1961).

A Service of Remembrance and Celebration of Irene’s life will be held at St. John’s United Church, Middle LaHave on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. - The Rev. Ron Frampton officiating. Interment to follow in Middle LaHave Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John’s United Church, Middle LaHave, The Middle LaHave Cemetery Co. or to a charity of choice.
