Obituary for Capt. Patrick "Murray" Gurney

It is with great sadness that the family of Capt. Patrick “Murray” Gurney, 72, of Lunenburg, announces his sudden passing on Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at home.

Born in Canso, he was the son of the late Irving and Gladys (Casey) Gurney.

Murray’s entire working career was spent at sea where he served as Captain, Mate and a Teacher in the Marine Industry. At the time of his passing he was employed as Capt. with Cooke’s Aquaculture in New Brunswick. He was very proud in 2000 to travel around the world as crew member aboard the Picton Castle.

He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 23, Lunenburg. Murray enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and when he was not at sea he loved spending quality time at home with his family.

Murray is survived by his wife, Phyllis; son, Michael (Erica Barkhouse), Northwest; daughters, Lee-Ann (Ray) Dares, Centre, Lori Gurney (Daniel Conrad), Riverport, grandchildren, Lucas and Kory-lee Dares and Jaykob Barkhouse; sisters, Sandra (Eugene) Newell, Valerie (Donald) MacKenzie both of Canso and a brother, Fred (Polly) Gurney of Canso and several nieces and nephews.

Murray was predeceased by his son, Cory in 2000 and brothers, Wayne, Paul, Milton, Arnold and Russell.

Friends are invited to share their memories of Murray with his family during visitation on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg and where Liturgy of the Word Service will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. Father Jim O’Connor, officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Lunenburg Fishermen’s Memorial Monument Society or to the Diabetes Association of N. S.
