Obituary for Mervyn Leon Shauffenburg

It is with great sadness the family of Mervyn Leon Shauffenburg, 80, of Back Centre announce his passing on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater.

Born in Front Centre, he was the son of the late Melburne and Marjorie (Wentzell) Shauffenburg.

Mervyn started his working career with National Sea Products at the early age of fourteen and then went as a truck driver delivering oil for Schmeisser’s Oil Company. He later went to work with his uncle operating the Lunenburg Dairy and the Lunenburg Bowlarama and then retired due to ill health from Coca-Cola in Bridgewater.

Active within his church of Grace Lutheran, First South, Mervyn served in the choir for over fifty years, was on church council and supported the work of the church. In earlier years, Mervyn sang in the Highliner Choir. Over the years he was a member of the Grace Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member and past Master of Unity Lodge #4 of the Masonic Order and Past Grand Steward of the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia, the Philae Shriners, and member and Past President of the South Shore Shriners Club. Mervyn was a faithful member for many years of the Lunenburg Jaycees where he was a Senator.

Mervyn is survived by his wife, Joanne; daughter, Gwendolyn (Bruce Hatfield), Shelburne; sons, Graham (Kimberly), Back Centre, Kenneth, Dayspring; grandchildren, Krystal-Anne (Jon) Clattenburg, Jamie-Lee Skinner, Shay-Lynn Skinner; great-grandchildren, Ciaran, Greyson, McKynleigh and Brynleigh.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by an infant child.

Friends are invited to share their memories of Mervyn with his family during visitation on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy #3, Lunenburg and where Unity Lodge # 4 of the Masonic Order will hold a Masonic service at 6:45 prior to the visitation, Funeral service to celebrate Mervyn’s life will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. from Grace Lutheran Church, First South, Rev. Rick Pryce officiating. Interment to follow in Sunny Valley Cemetery, Centre.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to Grace Lutheran Church, Sunny Valley Cemetery, Centre or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
