Obituary for Frederick Robert Romkey

It is with deep sadness that the family of Frederick Robert Romkey, 91, of Lunenburg, announce his passing on May 9, 2019 at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.

Born in Blue Rocks, NS, he was a son of the late Thomas and Ada (Corkum) Romkey.

Freddie was a permanent fixture on the corner of King & Lincoln Street for over 62 years where his services as a taxi driver would take you to whatever your destination was with entertaining discussion of current events, a lively debate about his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs or just a friendly conversation about anything. It is a rare person who does not know the familiar smile, wave and comment of Freddie Romkey – he was at peace with himself, loved what he did and loved the people he got to meet.

Freddie also fished for many years, was an avid gardener and coached minor hockey for over 15 years. He had the opportunity to coach his 4 boys, Robert, Kevin, Randy and Darren – he enjoyed these moments immensely even if the boys sometimes did not.

When he stopped coaching that did not mean he stopped going to the rink; he and Marjorie always attended as many games as they could, both near and far and when the boys stopped playing that didn’t stop him, they attended most of Noah’s and Olivia’s games as well.

He shared his love of gardening with his family, it was a familiar sight to see the grandkids out in the strawberry or pumpkin patch with their Grampie.

A piece of Freddie was lost when his beloved Marjorie passed away in 2011. The woman who provided him strength and set him straight when he needed it was no longer by his side. He drew strength from his family, cherishing time spent with Randy in Blue Rocks, Hockey Road trips with Darren and family suppers with Robert.

Freddie was a man who truly put his entire heart into whatever he did, whether it was a husband, father, grandfather, taxi driver, fisherman, gardener, coach, fan or friend, our lives are the better for knowing him and the corner of King and Lincoln will always be a little bit sadder without Freddie Romkey.

Freddie is survived by his sons, Robert, Wolfville, Randy (Annette), Lunenburg, Darren (Missy), Lunenburg; grandchildren, Kevin, Heather, Noah, Olivia, Jonathan, Brittany; great-grandchildren, Anthony, Thomas, Julia; sisters, Daisy Hume, Bridgewater, Vivian Gibson, Hamilton, ON, Kathryn Knickle, Blue Rocks as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie; son, Kevin; brothers, Gerald, Harold and sister, Jessie.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy #. 3, Lunenburg, with visitation Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service to celebrate Freddie’s life will be held on Wednesday at 11 am. from St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg, Rev. Laura Marie Piotrowicz, officiating. Interment to follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg.

Flowers from immediate family only, memorial donations made to St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg, Lunenburg Fire Department or to a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

In the spirit of Freddie please always share a warm smile and a quick hello.
