Obituary for Dr. Brian Charles Davis

Brian Charles Davis

It is with blazing joy we celebrate a life well lived and with equal sadness we announce its passing. After a courageous journey with ALS, Brian, 71, chose to leave this life on the morning of Thursday, September 26, 2019, through MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying), while speaking out for Organ & Tissue Donation.

He leaves behind his wife and partner of 24 years, Susan Jane Atkinson; his children, Gregg, Lindsay and first wife Rita (Sampson) Davis; his stepchildren, Alison, Becky, and Kip (Keen); his sisters, Rosalind Jones and Maureen Davis; nephews, Alexander, Aidan, and Mark; niece, Jennifer; and 9 amazing grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ross and Jess (Holmes) Davis; his brothers, Gregg and Ross.

Brian loved action and lived a very physical life: swimming, sports, sailing, jiving, long distance running. He was happiest at the tiller of a sailboat, or with his tool belt on levelling joists for a deck. He loved building and working with power tools, and a friend once said, "If chisels had cords attached, Brian would have a set." He had a way with engines and motors and could start anything - chain saws, snow blowers, tillers, tractors, motor bikes.

He inspired people around him with his enthusiasm and got just about everyone in the family - Susan, children, grandchildren - into running, and his best days these later years started with a ferry ride across the Lahave River, a 4 kilometre run barefoot on Crescent Beach, a dash into the cold Atlantic, then breakfast at the bakery. Nothing was impossible in Brian's world. He drilled rock, installed windows and toilets, took on waterfalls in an open canoe. His proudest accomplishment in his sixties was training for and running the Boston Marathon with his Lunenburg running buddies. Brian spent his professional life working as a dentist and he always said he loved every day of his work. He helped all of us in so many different ways with our own lives and projects.

Our world won't be the same without him, but we will do our best to carry on remembering his zest for life, his courage, his willingness to do battle through difficult times. In keeping with Brian's wishes, cremation will take place, followed by Brian's last run to Second Peninsula Cemetery, Saturday, November 30, 11 am, with family, friends, and fellow runners cheering him on. Donations in his memory can be made to alsnbns.ca, "donate".
