Obituary for Kathleen "Kaye" Audrey Gray (Johnson)

Kathleen (Kaye) Audrey Gray (nee Johnson), age 88, passed away peacefully at Harbour View Haven, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia on September 30, 2019.

Formerly of Mahone Bay, Kaye was born in Sandwich, Ontario. She is predeceased by her parents Tom and Nancy Johnson, Windsor, Ontario, her husband Douglas Heath Gray, her brothers, Thomas, Essex, Ontario and Allan, Commerce Township, Michigan, USA.

Kaye is survived by her brother, Richard Johnson (Christine), sisters in law, Joan and Jackie, several nieces and nephews, 23 great nieces and nephews and six great, great nieces and nephews. Kaye was the loving grandmother of Lauren McAuley, daughter of Paul and Linda McAuley, Mahone Bay.

In her early years, Kaye studied ballet and tap. She was part of a dance troop that performed under the War Department, USO Entertainment Committee. This dance troop contributed to the Canadian Police “Spitfire” Fund that presented a new Spitfire fighter plane to the RCAF in 1942. As a young woman, Kaye was a professional chorus dancer.

Kaye married Arthur Douglas Heath Gray in 1955. She worked as a bookkeeper in the medical field as they settled in Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal before moving to Mahone Bay in 1978. Kaye worked in the Mahone Bay Medical Centre and subsequently in the office of the late Dr. Abriel.

Kaye served on the boards of Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital (9 years), The Health Services Association of the South Shore (4years), Harbour View Haven (8 years), and she belonged to the Mahone Bay Hospital Auxiliary (16 years).

Kaye was an active member of the Trinity United Church, Mahone Bay, most of her life.

She loved big band music, reading and crosswords, in her spare time she loved to play bridge and work in her garden. Kay spent a lot of time at the beach and at soccer games with her granddaughter. She also enjoyed travelling with her friends and family to Europe, The British Isles, Florida, Cuba and Alaska.

Kaye volunteered at various festivals in Mahone Bay, Wooden Boat, Scarecrow and Father Christmas. She especially enjoyed her time with friends at the RCMP office in Mahone Bay where badges were issued to the volunteers. Kaye will be missed by family and friends alike.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy #3, Lunenburg and from where a memorial service will be held on Friday, October 11 at 11:00 a.m., Rev. Lee Simpson officiating. Interment will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to the Alzheimer’s Society or to Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg would be appreciated.
