Obituary for Guenter Braunert

It is with great sadness, that the family of Guenter Braunert, age 83, of Chester Basin, announces his passing on Monday, October 7, 2019 at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.

Born in Strehlen (formerly Germany, now Poland), he was a son of the late Traugott and Emma (Smolla) Braunert and grew up there until 1945. Before the end of the war in 1945, his mother Emma and her children Guenter and Willi fled to Ebstorf, West Germany. There Guenter completed his vocation in carpentry. In 1956 he immigrated to Canada as a skilled finished carpenter. Years later in Toronto he met his wife May, who came to Canada from England.

Guenter pursued job opportunities in eastern Canada and as a result, his family came to Nova Scotia to live. Settling in Dartmouth until the 1980`s, he and his family moved to Chester Grant into their home Guenter had built. As a skilled carpenter with a sharp eye for detail, his work became highly reputable in the kitchen industry. In his leisure time he enjoyed maintaining his home, spending time in the kitchen cooking and sailing his laser or motoring on the lake.

Guenter is survived by his wife of 53 years, Edith May, Chester Basin; daughter, Gabrielle (Stephen Snair), Hammonds Plains; son, David (Kaye Hirtle), Chester, as well as grandson, Brandon. In Germany Guenter is also survived by brother, Willi Braunert,
cousin Heinz Dieter Matschek (Gisela) and cousin Dietrich Smolla.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy #3, Lunenburg. A graveside service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to the Children’s Wish Foundation or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
