Obituary for Captain Vernon Robert Conrad

It is with great sadness that the family of Captain Vernon Robert Conrad, 96, of Lunenburg, announce his passing on Thursday, February 6th, 2020 in the Veteran’s Unit of Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.

Born in Rose Bay, Vernon was a son of the late Henry and Florence (Peeler) Conrad. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Vernon went to sea at 13 years of age and was dory fishing by the age of 15. He worked with Lorne Ritcey, fishing out of Riverport. During WWII he worked at the Halifax Shipyard, then went on to join the merchant marines. After the war, he returned to Lunenburg and at age 22 he bought a his first boat, the Irving MR, and later bought a 55 ft. long liner, the Wayne Michael, and fished for another 10 years on his own vessel. In 1964 he joined Adams and Knickle, scallop Fishing as skipper of the Annette Marie, until the age of 68, retiring in 1991. Vernon was blessed to have lived a long and full life.

He was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg.

Vernon is survived by sons, Michael (Ann Marie), Bridgewater, Wayne (Elaine), Blue Rocks; grandchildren, Michelle (Paul Osha); Mark (Kristen), Scott (Donna Hicks), Christa (Dwayne Tanner); great-grandchildren, Kayden, Gavin, Anna, Sarah, Riley, and Justin; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Vernon was predeceased by his wife Frances; daughter, Annette, sisters, Mildred, Jean, Muriel; brothers, Donald and Gilbert and Bruce, and great-grandaughter, Kaley Rose.

Friends are invited to share their memories of Vernon with his family during visitation on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. A funeral service to celebrate Vernon’s life will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg. Rev. Lawrence Mawhinney officiating, Chaplain of the Veteran's Unit of Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Private family nterment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg.

Flowers from the immediate family only, memorial donations made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
