Obituary for Phyllis Schmeisser

It is with great sadness that the family of Phyllis Verna Schmeisser, 93, of First Peninsula passed away Sunday, February 09, 2020 at the QE II Health Services Centre, Halifax.

Born in Cooks Brook, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary (Lawson) Cook.

Phyllis graduated from Miss Murphy’s Business School in 1943 and married her husband, Norman in 1947. They moved to Lunenburg in 1949 and she worked in the family business for many years.

Taking an active interest in her community, Phyllis volunteered at Harbour View Haven, at the Gift Shop of Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital and with Meals on Wheels and in earlier years with Lunenburg Minor Hockey. In June 2008 she recognized as CTV’s volunteer of the Month.

Over the years she was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 23 Auxiliary, FMH Hospital Auxiliary and the Alexandra Rebekah Lodge. A faithful member of Central United Church, Lunenburg, Phyllis was actively involved in the UCW, Cub Leader and the work of the church.

Phyllis was gifted with her hands and had a great love for needlework, smocking and ceramics, and her love for cooking was evident in her breads, soups and fudge that many friends and family enjoyed.

Her love of life, family, friends and the community at large were so important to her. Phyllis’ quiet courage and strength of spirit, creativity and sense of humour will be carried forward by all those who knew and loved her. She was a golden thread of love spun invisibly through all our hearts and lives.

Phyllis is survived by sons, Gary (Bonnie) Schmeisser, Bedford; Brian (Bernadette) Schmeisser, Montague, PEI, Michael (Shirley) Schmeisser, Qualicum Beach, BC; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Schmeisser, Lunenburg; grandchildren, Kyle, Kristin; Sarah, Mark; Krystina, Kimberly, Jaden; great grandchildren, James, Tyler, Samantha, Adison, Warren, Mara and Kadie, and several nieces and nephews.
