Obituary for Sylvia Ann Booth

It is with profound sadness but deep gratitude that the family and many friends of Sylvia Ann Booth, 75, of Lunenburg announce her passing on Monday, September 14, 2020.

Born in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, Sylvia was the daughter of the late William and Mary (Sereda) Shewchuk. However, it was at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia where she moved with her late husband Bill in 1979 to raise their family, that Sylvia left her indelible mark and legacy.

A beloved mother and G’ma, Sylvia was also a highly respected business counsellor and entrepreneur. Having studied psychology at college, she taught herself accounting to land a job as office manager for a fledgling neighbourhood business, Peninsula Farm, before going into business for herself. She became the first executive director of the Lunenburg Board of Trade, a position she held until her accounting business, New View Consulting, grew to a full-time enterprise. Even then she continued as the Board’s long time volunteer treasurer and was always available as a valued advisor on Board affairs. Meanwhile, long-time New View clients bragged of getting bonus psychological counselling with their accounting. In 2004, Sylvia’s diverse skills made her the ideal candidate for her “dream job” as regional business facilitator for Women in Business, an ACOA-funded initiative run through Mount Saint Vincent University. Traveling the length of the South Shore, she provided training, resources and support to women entrepreneurs looking to start and grow their businesses. Her sage advice, particularly to women juggling business aspirations and family, was invaluable. After six years in the role, she returned to New View full-time but her commitment to advocacy, support, safety and personal development for women never diminished. Sylvia’s passion for community was matched only by her belief in the value of service. She volunteered with so many organizations, the list is too long to include here. Suffice to say her efforts spanned the whole of the community and earned her many devoted friends who proved indispensable during her illness.

Sylvia is survived by her daughter Lisa (Nicolas) Bozek, Versailles, France; grandchildren Connor, Jaxon, Kaden, William and Louis; and sister Joan Bauer, Little Bear Lake, Saskatchewan.

She was predeceased by her husband Bill (senior) and son Bill (junior).
