Obituary for Gordon Henry Baker

Gordon Henry Baker

Age 92 of Centre, Lunenburg County, lost his battle with cancer on Dec 29, 2020 at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, ALC Unit.

Gordon was born on Hermans Island, November 3, 1928 to Lowell and Muriel (Westhaver) Baker.

Dad grew up surrounded by family, roaming and playing in the fields and on the shores of Hermans Island. He grew up fast, starting work at 14, getting his first car and then his drivers licence at 16. He started his working life at Acadian Supplies, then the Lunenburg Foundry and finally National Sea Products where he worked in jobs as varied as truck driver, snow plow operator, fresh fish and the ‘Birds-Eye’ departments. Dad retired at age 64 after 35 years at National Sea. He also spent 3 years as a Sapper with the Canadian Army Reserve Militia.

Family was very important to Dad, many summer Sundays were spent on Hermans Island at the family picnic. There were also many gatherings at the homes of his siblings and later get-togethers at Mushamush.
The ocean was also a big part of Dads life, he was a part-time lobster fisherman in his younger days and operated one of the last boats powered by a ‘make-and-break’ engine on Mahone Bay. He loved being outside whether gardening, driving his tractor on his 12 acre woodlot, cutting firewood or deer hunting. Dad also took great pride in his cars, his last ‘baby’ being his 1987 Caprice Classic Brougham.

Dad was active in his local church, First South United, where he sang in the choir and helped to maintain the church by his participation in church suppers and his skills with a paint brush. He was also a proud blood donor, having made over 150 donations.

An avid poker player, Dad spend many Monday evenings playing with a group friends and co-workers, right up until these last few years. It was a very sad day when he had to retire from poker. He also enjoyed his Sunday morning talks at the ‘garage’ with his brother Douglas and the guys.

He is survived by is wife Marguerite (nee Zinck), daughter Vicki (Robert) Griswold, Spectacle Lakes; Barry (Sara) Baker, Chester Basin; Nicole Baker, Wilmington Delaware; grandchildren Nicholas Griswold, Natasha Griswold, Paul Baker and Ben Baker. He is also survived by his brother Douglas Baker, Schnares Crossing.
Gordon was predeceased by his sisters Gwendolyn Crouse, Isabelle Kirwan, Madeline Brown, Shirley Bradford, Kathy Mossman and brothers Lawson, Eugene and Ronald.

The family would like to extend our thanks to the nurses and doctors at the Alternative Level of Care (ALC) Unit at FMH. We really appreciate the kindness and care that was provided to Dad in his last days, and I know he enjoyed the 9PM ice cream snacks.

We would request that any memorial gifts in Dads memory be made to the FMH ALC Unit, or to a charity of your choice.

Due to COVID-19 protocols and travel restrictions, there will be a family service at the Martins Brook Cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg. ww.sweenyfuneralhome.ca
