Obituary for Janine Marie Findlay (Donahue)

Janine Marie (Donahue) Findlay (JJ Goss)

A good woman has left her physical life.

Janine’s mortal adventure started on February 21, 1958 in Marlborough, Massachusetts and went to the next level on March 12, 2021, departing from Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

Janine was a poet, writer, mystic. Three times a wife, three times a mother, three times a grandmother, sibling to three. She was smart, funny, irreverent, kind, loving, and wise. Her journey was one marked by both joy and sorrow, disappointment and accomplishment.

She found her true happiness, moving to Canada in 2009, marrying David Findlay in Tofino, BC and then, after a short sojourn in Toronto, moving to their dream home in Lunenburg, where they played, lived, and loved.

Dementia is a cunning foe. It creeps up on you without much warning. A little sign here or there then, suddenly, a line has been crossed and a diagnosis. Some call it “the slow goodbye” but, really, it is a thousand goodbyes. Cared for at home as long as possible, Janine entered care in late summer, 2020. There is more good to be said about the professionals who tended Janine through her time in care and palliation than can be captured here.

Predeceased by her parents Harold and Martha Donahue. Memories of this unique life force are cherished by best friend Diane Fitzgerald and her family in Massachusetts, by her sister Pat Hickok (Mike), Florida. Husband David will carry her spark in gratitude for how Janine brought new meaning to life and taught him about freedom and ease.

In keeping with her beliefs and wishes, leaving behind the parts of her that can help others, there will be no public, formal commemoration. Rather, in quiet remembrance, her ashes will be scattered in symbolism of how her energy will continue on.

If you are moved to do so, please contribute as you are able to your local Alzheimer’s Society and raise a glass to Janine.
