Obituary for David Freeman Allen

It is with profound sadness that the family of David Freeman Allen (Pumpkin) of Corkum’s Island, announce his passing on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater at the age of 74.

Born in Bridgewater, he was the son of the late Freeman and Dorothy (Powers) Allen.

David spent his career at Lunenburg Foundry and Engineering Limited as a Mechanical Engineer where he began his career in the foundry “Shaking Out (castings)” then becoming a Junior Engineer. He moved into the role of Superintendent and retired as Company Vice President in 2016 with combined service to Lunenburg Foundry of over 50 years. Over the years he designed marine hardware and propellers and oversaw numerous Vessel Refits. He enjoyed mentoring young engineers, in particular his daughter Laura. He was known for his commitment to quality and workmanship.

David met his fun-loving wife and best friend, Elaine, at the Lunenburg Tavern and were married for 47 years. David will be remembered for his deep voice, especially when it carried through a quiet room. He had an ability to carry on a conversation with anyone he met.

He was a member, Past President and headed the Ice Committee of the Lunenburg Curling Club and was the recipient of the Joyce Meyer Merrit Award from the Nova Scotia Curling Association. He was also an active member of the board of the Lunenburg & District Swimming Pool. He most enjoyed being the “starter” at swim meets, where he initially met Dr. Robinson who took a special interest in his health when he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2020.

David and Elaine enjoyed taking road trips with family and friends. Their mini-van was always full of laughter. David, not known for his athletic ability, was passionate about sports. He was the manager of the Acadia University Men’s basketball team and was inducted into the Acadia Sports Hall of Fame. He also had an appreciation for music and dance. In his later years he became a proud grandfather to his beloved grandchildren Ryan and Charlotte who were the apple of his eye.
