Obituary for Patricia "Pat" Lilian Smith

It is with great sadness we report that Patricia “Pat” Lilian Smith, 91, of Chester, formerly of Lunenburg and Bridgewater, passed away on Monday, January 2, 2023, at Shoreham Village Long Term Care.

Born in Otley, United Kingdom, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Ida (Eagles) Smith. She moved to Toronto in 1955 and completed an internship in adult services within the public library system, followed by a degree in French at the University of Toronto. In 1959 she joined the library service in Cranbrook, British Columbia, before moving to Hay River in 1965, where over the next 18 years she helped to establish and develop the public library system for the Northwest Territories, eventually managing a team of seven staff covering thirty local libraries. Her destination of choice for retirement was Lunenburg, where she became active in the local community including working as office co-ordinator for Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival in the 1990’s. In Lunenburg she developed a passion for genealogy which she continued until suffering a stroke in January 2020

Pat is survived by her brother; Mike (Janet) Smith; niece, Karen Smith; nephew, Jason (Cari Morningstar), and cousins Sally Gilmore and Charlotte Smart, all of the U.K., and is fondly remembered by her dear friends Janet Clark and Rev. Linda MacDonald.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. In keeping with Pat’s wishes there is to be no public memorial service.

Memorial donations made to the Leprosy Mission or to St. John's Anglican Church in Lunenburg would be appreciated by the family.
