Obituary for Constance "Connie" Edwina Lutes

It is with sorrow that the family announce the passing of Constance Edwina Lutes at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital on Friday, Jan 13, 2023 at the age of 89. She was the daughter of Edward and Ellen (Swaine) Northup.

Independent and determined, she was an inspiration to those who knew her. Her talents were numerous. She enjoyed drawing. She had a lovely singing voice and could play several instruments. Many a kitchen party was held in her small kitchen during her earlier years. She enjoyed being active and was a member of a bowling team, a softball team and swung a mean racket at badminton. She was luckiest, however, at bingo.

She loved driving and was always up for an adventure, whatever her age. Keenly observant, she saw things that others missed, even when she was behind the wheel. She loved nature and always felt closest to God when she was working in her gardens or mowing her yard. She enjoyed watching the birds at her feeders. Even a little chickadee perched in a tree made her smile. She enjoyed words and word games and had a quick wit.

Her happy place was her home in New Horton, NB with the love of her life, her husband George. Together they raised an exceptional family of cats. They shared a love of fishing, which was an experience. You hadn’t really been fishing if your life wasn’t in danger at least once. Connie was a master at yard sales and furnished their home with her incredible finds.

After George’s passing, she moved to Nova Scotia to be closer to her family. There she took delight in watching the world outside her window. To her neighbours, she was a force of nature. To her family she was simply “Mom” or “Nan”, a woman of wisdom and love. She filled her world with dozens of rainbows refracted from the numerous crystals hanging in her windows. Every day she managed to find joy, whether it be large or small.

She is survived by her sister Rose Marie (Eugene) Nickerson, children Harold (Jean) Clitheroe, Bonnie (Ron) MacIver, Heidi Slauenwhite, son and daughter-in-law Michael and Margot Lutes, Linda Thorson and son-in law Philip Morris. She will be missed by her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband George Lutes and her daughter Geraldine Morris.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Dana Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg. At Connie’s request, there will be no funeral. A private graveside service will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital.

Heartfelt thanks for the care provided by the VON, Home care staff, Melanie at Palliative Care, Dr. Millen, the paramedics, and the caring nurses on the ER floor of Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital. Special thanks to MaryAnn Morris for her care and friendship with Connie and all the neighbours who helped and looked out for her. She was truly blessed.
