Obituary for Alfred William Tanner

It is with great sadness that the family of Alfred William Tanner, a long time Martin’s River resident, announces his passing on December 30, 2022 at the Camp Hill Veteran’s Unit in Halifax. Alfred was 95 years old.

Born in Blue Rocks on December 26, 1927, Alfred was the son of the late Fenton Tanner and Ellen (Knickle) Tanner.

Alfred is survived by his son, Blaine (daughter-in-law Ellen) Arizona; daughter-in-law, Irene, Toronto; grandchildren, Shawna, Jeffrey, Amanda, Samantha, Andrew, John, and Claudia, as well as numerous great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Margaret Edna “Peggy,” to whom he was married for sixty years, son Jeffrey; sisters, Arlene Silver, Anastasia (Pat) MacDonald, and a brother, Gordon.

Alfred was proud to be a veteran and to have served as an A.B. Seaman during WWII. He worked his entire career at International Paper in Toronto. He retired at 55, came back to his family roots, and settled in Martin’s River for the remainder of his life. Alfred was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion #23 in Lunenburg and enjoyed socializing with his fellow veterans.

Alfred loved to be on the water with Peggy, the love of his life, and was out on his boat fishing at every opportunity in the waters off the Western Shore and during the winters they both so enjoyed in Florida. As Peggy was known to say, “me and Alfred under the heavens, that’s all I need.”

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Lunenburg. A service to celebrate the lives of Alfred and Margaret will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday March 4, 2023, at St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg. Cremation has taken place and internment will occur at a later date yet to be determined.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Anglican Church in Lunenburg, or to any other charity.
