Memories of Childhood

My most prominent memories of Ken are from when we were children. Kerr's Farm was  frequently visited to see Grandma and Aunt Pearl and Uncle Amos. Ken and I were close in age so we shared some interests. The most delightful times were at Christmas when we would spend the day visiting with cousins and uncles and aunts. It was exciting to be the first to arrive. Ken would take me to see his presents which he had carefully taken to his room for safe keeping. Later many more cousins would arrive and they were not as privileged as I was. They would not be given a tour in case some new toy would be broken . With many children on the scene it was always a fun day. The house was big and there were places to hide and stairs to run up and down. It must have been chaotic for Aunt Pearl, cooking and keeping the kitchen organized, and at the same time talking to her visitors as they caught up on family news. Sandy and Amos Riddell would also be invited, and the boy cousins spent time planning tricks to play on them, or any other unsuspecting adult. Dinner time came and we would all be seated at long tables to enjoy the wonderul turkey dinner. There was much noise, talking and laughing and eventually it was time to head for home. The men and boys would get dressed warmly and go to the stable to hitch up horses to sleighs and bring them to the house for each family. We would pile in amongst blankets, heated bricks for foot warmers and a layer of straw under the robes which covered the floor of the sleigh. Ken entered into these festivities in his quiet way and those days were highlights of our young lives . This describes one of the best of times, many decades ago, and Ken was a major part of the times..
