Obituary for Captain Basil William Grandy

Captain Basil William Grandy
It is with great sadness that the family of Captain Basil William Grandy, 87, of Lower Branch, announces his passing on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Shoreham Village Home for Special Care, Chester.

Born in Jersey Harbour, NL, he was the son of the late Joseph and Josephine (White) Grandy.

Basil worked in the scallop fishing industry most of his working life. He started as a dory fisherman on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. Basil had many men in his employ who became lifelong friends who were like family.

Basil never lost his love of Newfoundland and all it had to offer. He was a true Newfoundlander who shared his bounty and was always there to lend a hand. He will be forever missed by his loving family and friends but can never be replaced. Dad had a way of finding laughter and humour in any situation and his kindness will never be forgotten.

He is survived by his wife, the former Loretta Martin; daughter, Karen (Ian) Campbell, Pine Grove; sons, Basil “Joey” (Denise), Clyde River; Jim (Nancy), Lower Branch; Kevin (Pam), Hemford; daughter-in-law, Cathy Grandy; Grandchildren, Melissa (Barrett); Shawn (Tiffany), Ricky (Christine), Karen (Adam), Robin, Jonathan, Kelly, Holly (Gordon), Adam (Kandace) and Chelsea; great-grandchildren, who he adored, Eden, Felicity, Nicholas, Tucker, Campbell, Oliver, Lennon and River.

Besides his parents, Basil is predeceased by sisters, Phoebe, Myrtle, Fannie and brother, Lloyd

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213, Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg, where visitation will take place Monday, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm and where a memorial service to celebrate Basil’s life will be held Tuesday at 2:00 pm., Rev. Frances Boutilier officiating. Interment will be in Rhodes Corner Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Bridgewater.

We would also like to thank the staff of Shoreham C-Wing and housekeeping for all their love and support they have shown our father during his stay.
